Good Practices in the Media Literacy Development in Bulgaria and Germany

A meeting of representatives of the academic community, the state authorities, the non-profit sector and the media from both Bulgaria and Germany took place in the Business Office Center, Sofia on 11.10.2022 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event was organized by the Bulgarian Coalition for Media Literacy with the courtesy of the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

It was attended in both face-to-face and online mode – by more than 40 representatives who wished to share experiences from various projects and initiatives carried during the year.The event was held in two parts – first, a panel, in which Ms.Iglika Ivanova and Ms. Antoaneta Vasileva, project managers of Bulgarian Media Literacy Coalition, along with the team leader of a project conducted by the Public communications department of the University for National and World Economy, shared useful ideas on initiatives in the area under discussion. They were followed by detailed introduction of the German experience presented by representatives of Bavarian academic institutions and journalists from ARD.   Then a presentation was made by the Secretary of the Bulgarian Electronic Media Council, Ms. Prolet Velkova, who expressed her willingnes for a greater degree of cooperation between the Media Colaition and the National Media regulator. Prof. Danail Danov, SU “St. Kliment Ohridski”, introduced the participants to the electronic resources available online for the general public and developed under the European Safe Online Initiative project.             

The second part of the meeting took place in the form of a round table, where all participants shared experiences and discussed opportunities for joint activity. Here a special attention deserves the presentations of the representative of the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, Ms. Aksenia Boneva, chairman of the Expert Council on Media Literacy, who introduced the attendees to the work on the preparation of a National Strategy in this area.
